Discipline and Limits

What this looks like at home

You feel like you have tried everything. You are either too strict and feel bad after, or too flexible and feel walked over. You repeat yourself, threaten consequences, or lecture. You sometimes shout, shame, or spank, then regret it. You want respectful children and a peaceful home. You also want to keep your values and your authority, without using fear as the tool.

What is usually driving it

Most adults were raised with punishment, not skill teaching. Fear based discipline can create quick compliance, but it does not teach self control or responsibility. It teaches avoidance. Children hide, lie, or submit, and the same behaviour returns. Discipline works long term when limits are clear, follow through is steady, and the child is coached in what to do instead. Parents also need a plan for their own triggers, so consistency is possible on hard days.

What we work on

  • Setting clear limits in plain language
  • Follow through that is firm, consistent, and predictable
  • Consequences that teach and build responsibility
  • Validation and empathy alongside boundaries, acknowledging feelings while holding the line
  • Repair after you lose it, apologising without shame spirals
  • Ending shouting, humiliation, and spanking with practical alternatives
  • Chores and responsibility by age, building contribution without bribery
  • Handling refusal, stalling, and selective listening

Tools you will learn

Boundary scripts, consequence templates, and a follow through plan you can repeat. Validation phrases that reduce defensiveness, plus the next steps that make the limit real. A simple chores system with age based chore lists, setup tips, and a routine for handling resistance without arguing. Repair templates that rebuild trust and reset the boundary.

Suggested ways to get support

Workshops give you the discipline system and scripts to implement it quickly. 1 to 1 coaching is best if you want a tailored plan, support changing habits, or help aligning caregivers and extended family. Talks and seminars suit schools and groups seeking practical alternatives to punishment.
